Patients with acute hepatic failure (with or without multiple organ failure) can be supported while awaiting liver recovery or as bridge to transplantation. Several support technologies have been and are being explored for liver support, such as albumin dialysis (MARS), sorbent-augmented dialysis, and the bioartificial liver. These therapies are currently not available for commercial use.
LSUHSC provides liver support with coupled plasma filtration/absorption and hemofiltration, which removes plasma from the circulation and treats it before returning it back to the circulation. This therapy is optionally supplemented with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) as needed.
Patients may be candidates for support with the following conditions. These are guidelines only, so all potential referrals should be discussed with the ECLS physician.
